The Siesta
I want to reference El Jefe Maximo's post about Spain and the debate about ending the Siesta, which can be found here. I think that if the Siesta was done away with and businesses stayed open from 9-5, it would help the businesses. There have been many times when I have wanted to go to a mexican restaurant for a late lunch, early dinner, or just a snack and they have been closed.

Yes, it is true that businesses that close over certain hours or on certain days will lose the business of people like you who are looking for their product or services during those closed times. However, I would imagine that these business owners are quite aware of this fact and still choose to close shop anyway because there are other more important (and probably not monetary) reasons (at least for them) to do so. It is hard for us to appreciate that the cost/benefit analysis has been weighed and a decision made on this basis, and it is equally difficult for us to understand that what is being undertaken by these business owners and workers during the closed hours is much more highly valued than the loss of sales revenue that being closed means.
