The ELN (National Liberation Army) declares a truce in Colombia during elections

The Colombian guerilla ELN suspended all military actions yesterday due to the parliamentary elections that will take place on March the 12th.

This is a historical event because the rebel group had never acknowledged the elections nor had it made a call for citizens to vote freely. “The ELN, as express manifestation of its will for peace, and to strengthen this projection towards the democratization of Colombia, will not incur in any military action that would affect election day on March the 12th,” said military chief rebel ‘Antonio García’ from La Habana.

The subversive leader claimed that that electoral truce was possible thanks to the rapprochement of peace, which have been taking place since December, between the Government and the ELN in Cuba.
