US war on drugs

This article is mainly about Colombia president Uribe's reelection. One of the most interesting points I found was in regard to the significantly small amount of Coca field reduction there has been despite the United States pouring in billions of dollars to eradicate cocaine production. Personally, I believe the US is wasting its money and further complicating matters between conflicting groups in the country. Like the Green article's comparison of the drug market to a balloon, when you squeeze off cocaine supply in one area, it pops up somewhere else. When there is a demand for it, there will always be a market. Considering the United States is the largest consumer of cocaine in the world, perhaps its government should take the responsibility to teach the dangers of cocaine instead of the countless ads which warn teens about marijuana.
