CNN's website has a feature called The Hispanic Experience Today, which has lots of articles about the Hispanic and Latino population in the United States.
This one is about those very terms, "Hispanic" and "Latino," and how poorly they actually describe the very diverse Spanish-speaking and Latin American demographic.

"This one" was a very interesting article. It is so hard to define what it is to be Latino, and a lot of people don't want to be put in that category, even though society views them as such. A lot of people I met in Ecuador identified as Latinos, in addition to being Ecuadorian. They feel a kinship with other people of Latin America. But these Ecuadorians I met have very little in common (culturally) with many "Latinos" in the US, so another term could possibly be "Latino-American," although I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't like that either.
