Guantanamo Bay

While Guantanamo Bay has existed for almost a century, I never really did research on it or understood exactly what the terms of the prison were. Though I was aware of the human rights issues involved with the base, after thinking about it, I can't understand how the United States has the nerve to continue to use that space in Cuba when we maintain such poor relations with the country otherwise. I feel as though not only is that illogical, and detrimental to our image, but it is also asking for trouble. I am surprised there hasn't been more danger for the military personnel there already. I did my research in the NYT - Americas section, they have a pretty nice concise history.

The NYT doesn't have anything that is nice or concise. And they don't have a clue about GTMO. Get over the lefty memes and try doing some real research.

don_cos - Just curious as to the particular lefty memes you think is being put forth here. All I see is basically an effort to try to make sense of the inconsistency and apparent paradox that we maintain a military base in a country with whom we have had such poor and acrimonious relations. Doesn't it strike you as odd that most countries hostile to one another don't have military bases in their enemies' countries? Heck, in the U.S. we'd chafe at the thought of an ALLY having an independent military base in the continental United States not subject to any kind of oversight by the U.S. government. Wondering at this inconsistency is not a lefty meme. It's a sign of rational curiosity.

And what is it about the NYT history of Guantanamo that you find incorrect, inconcise, and not nice? Have you looked at it? Or is your reaction just knee-jerk because it's the NYT?
